The essential challenge that most project managers face at some point in their careers is a daunting question of, “What’s the value of project management, anyway?”

Being able to answer this question without sounding defensive is hard. It can be awkward to explain what a project manager does, particularly in environments where hands-on delivery and deep technical expertise are valued over coordination and the ability to effectively deal with people.

Making a case for project management—or more to the point, for being a project manager—is important but not always straightforward. There are certainly arguments to be made, and insights to draw on, but doing this in a compelling and meaningful way is an art unto itself.
